Discover Microsoft QR code technology alias “Tag”

February 11th, 2010 Filed under: Mobile, Tips&Tricks

I still find this an amazing piece of technology! So simple but so practical! Capture a photo of a printed QR code with your mobile device. And immediately get any kind of information on the matter. (Car promotion, festival, artist profile, real estate, etc.)

It can be more specific info, an URL, a v card, pricing, ingredients, a note, etc.

Now Microsoft has the “Tag” (beta) ;) It even has reporting included, you can track how many visits you got by people scanning your tag in a magazine!

Also check out the Charts API of Google like I did with this http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=qr&chs=100×100&chl=http://www.rive.be&choe=UTF-8&chld=L|0

Let’s hope, now that the mobile market is growing exponentially worldwide… such technologies will soon be used, adapted and searched for, by a growing number of users! Can’t wait to see tons of products in the supermarket and magazines full with this printed codes!

Google Analytics Campaign Tracking For Adobe Flash

January 14th, 2010 Filed under: AS3, Flash, Tips&Tricks

Campaigning for your blog, everyone is doing it in a way. Posting your links on Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, etc. But how about really tracking them specifically?

It’s turned on by default in your Google Analytics account. So why leave those table/results empty? Only thing you should do is add some extra variables to your URL’s.

DEFECT: SWFObject 2.2 Dynamic embed method on Explorer 8

January 12th, 2010 Filed under: Flash, Tips&Tricks, Web

It came a bit as a shock to me, because at first, when I was checking out my own www.rive.be in Explorer 8… I thought I did something wrong in my HTML/Javascript  code. But it seems to be an issue with IE 8 on Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows Vista 64bit as far as I can tell.

Using the SWFObject 2.2 Test Suite:

  1. SWFObject 2.2 dynamic embed method (defect in IE8 on Win XP)
  2. SWFObject 2.2 static embed method (works)

So I went looking More …

Template PDF creation platform for PHP

December 22nd, 2009 Filed under: Tips&Tricks, Web

logoThis is something I was searching for a very long time! (No, it’s not a html->pdf converter like dompdf or an expensive java solution like LiveCycle PDF Generator)

LiveDocx is the name of this great free web service! Get started here. It’s smooth, fast and very easy to use.

It allows developers to create word processing documents by combining user-defined Microsoft Word templates with data from disparate data sources, such as XML files and databases. It is typically used to create professional, print-ready word processing documents in DOCX, DOC, RTF and PDF. It’s easy and well proven.

Flash hash mark deeplinks not indexed by Google

December 15th, 2009 Filed under: Flash, Tips&Tricks, Web

google_faviconGoogle doesn’t index any deeplink url passed the “Hash mark” (#) or “pound sign”. This was something completely new to me. “A common misconception with a lot of Flash developers using technologies such as SWFAddress for deeplinking.”

Links like:

http://www.rive.be/cms/#/Work%20Software
http://www.rive.be/cms/#/Work%20Language
http://www.rive.be/cms/#/Work%20API

…will not get indexed by Google? Whaat? I found out about this, when watching these Adobe Flash and search engine optimization (SEO) videos at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/seo/articles/flash_seo_videos.html. They’ll go deeper into it (from a  developers perspective) in the near future.

Check out the source code of http://www.rive.be or http://www.rive.be/cms/ and you’ll see I was already practising some of these SEO features.

Free advertising credit. User experience at Google Adwords

November 25th, 2009 Filed under: Tips&Tricks, Web

227_google-adwordsI keep receiving promotions from Google AdWords to “Get Started. The vouchers were ranging from €50 towards €60. All because I’m using tools like Google webmaster tools, Google Local business Center, etc.

“Attract more visitors to your website with a free advertising credit worth € 50,00″.

So logically I was very curious to try it out for the first time. Without forgetting that nothing is really for free. Once you’ve completed all the necessary steps, you’ll see (probably not) 3 small lines of text in the end. Which, as always, are important to read. More …

Flash TextField wrapper class for XHTML subscript and superscript tags

August 3rd, 2009 Filed under: AS3, Flash, Flex, Tips&Tricks

einstein1_wideweb__470x314,0I know, I’m too late, as we all have seen the new TextLayout framework by now. But maybe the “dummy level” of this class will come in handy for other some small projects.

See an example of the SubSuperTextField wrapper class or download the Flex Archive

This class scans your text for the valid xhtml or sup> tags, and will replace that part by a special embedded font for superscript and subscript. Just use it as you would use any other TextField object.

You’ll only have to pass a style Object in the constructor containing a reference of the embedded font of your choice.

Tip: Checkout the “Fixing jumpy htmltext links” TextField wrapper class of Tomek too…
